Steady Community App: For admin users

This article is for meant for media makers who have an editor or admin role in the app.

If you're looking for general info on the Steady community app, please check out

This article is meant for Steady support or media makers who have an admin role in the app who will be able to access specific features. Please make sure that you've spoken to Justus, Flavia or Christina before navigating the Admin dashboard of the app. When in doubt, please reach out to us and we'll be happy to help.

First Steps

These need to be done by Steady in collaboration with our third-party provide for the app (tchop).

Accessing the app as an admin

When you are given an admin role on the Steady Community App, you will be able to see an option to switch to "Admin Dashboard" from the web version of the app, which is accessible from here: https://{subdomain}.steady.community as well as https://{subdomain}-steady.tchop.io/webapp/.

(Note: the .steady.community URL will only be available once an SSL certificate is set up for that domain, see first steps)

In the left-hand navigation, under the "add content" button, you see an option to switch to the Admin Dashboard.

Most of the actions described on this page will be possible from the Admin Dashboard.

There are a few things you can also do from the native apps as an editor or admin:

  • Editing or deleting posts: From the app, click on any card that you want to delete via the three-dot-falafel-menu and hit Edit or Delete.

  • Adding content anywhere: As an admin, you can add new content from any page within the app. Your members will only be allowed to add content on the page (also called "mix" in the tchop-app-terminology) that you allow them to.

How to log in as an editor or admin?

There are two options for logging into the native iOS or Android apps as well as the web app as an editor or admin:

  1. via Steady login

If you have an active paid membership to your own publication, you can just log in with your Steady login and we will assign that email address to be an editor in the app.

  2. via tchop login

If you don't have an active paid membership to your own publication, we can provide you with a tchop login for both the native apps and web app.

    • You will receive an invitation email with a password.

      on the native apps

    • Install the app and open > welcome screen appears

    • Tap on the Steady logo 5x. You will see an notification at the bottom of the screen "For external login"

    • Click "Sign in". A login screen with email and password fields will appear.

    • Enter the credentials you received via email

      on the web

    • Enter your email address and password you received via email on a login screen that looks like this

Add or change your logo

Customize the bottom navigation

This is what the standard bottom navigation looks like

The following elements are mandatory (and cannot be removed):

  • Posts

  • Topics (in tchop terminology a "mix list")

  • Chat

The following elements are optional. There are mixes (not mix lists) and can contain specific content.

  • Community

  • Podcast

  • Social

You are required to have at least one and can have a maximum of all three.

Please do not change the bottom navigation other than what is described here. When in doubt, please reach out to Justus or Christina for support.

  • Navigate to the tchop admin backend, e.g. https://discover-steady.tchop.io/webapp/admin (or your channel)

  • Add the custom icon for Android + ios (you need to add the URLs below to each tab because they have different formats), which you find here (Steady employees only)

  • Update the name of that item for EN and DE and soon IT. To make it easier to navigate the app across projects, we allow customizing the Community and Social bottom nav, but want to keep everything else the same.

Add topics (mixes)

A topic in tchop terminology is called a mix. When you use topics on Steady and want all your Steady posts to be added to the app and appear in the respective topic, you need to add your Steady topics to the app. It is very important not to make any spelling mistakes as these are "hardcoded", if the topic is spelled wrong, the post won't get assigned to that topic. (Similarly, if the media maker changes the topic name on Steady, it also will break the integration)

A topic helps to organize available content. All content within a topic is shown on a separate page. When content is added to a topic via RSS (not manually), the content is pulled into that page from newest (on the bottom) to oldest (at the top). From there on, any new posts that get automatically added via RSS appear at the top. It's possible to change the order of posts manually on a topic page (but not on the main Posts feed).

  • Navigate to the tchop admin dashboard: https://discover-steady.tchop.io/webapp/admin

  • Navigate to mixes, click create mix in the top right corner

  • Add the mix title and optionally a description

    • If using the Steady topics, the mix title is the Topic Name and the Mix intro is the Description. (You can also omit the description if it is not wanted.)

  • Click on Settings to configure the mix more

    • on the Display tab

      • choose whether this content should be shown on the Posts screen (probably makes sense for most mixes, except topics that have their own dedicated mix or that contain user-generated content ("community"))

      • choose whether the topic should be shown in the Topics list

      • choose whether this mix should be pinned in the bottom nav (podcast, social, community), only one mix can be displayed in the pinned mixes, if you select a second one, the first one gets unselected

      • choose whether this content should be shown as a horizontal mix, see screenshot of what that looks like below

Horizontal mix is called "Scrolling" on Sebastian's project

    • on the Content tab

      • enable comments, reactions, sharing

      • display user for Community forum mixes, i.e. the place where you want user-generated content to show: this means that the user name will be displayed on a post, like here on Domenik's post

        • (user names will always be displayed on comments and in group chats)

    • on the Rights tab, choose

      • if members are allowed to post content in that topic. Members in the tchop context are "Readers". This needs to be selected for the "community forum" mix, if requested by the media maker.

      • The "Editor Limited" role can be assigned to more team members of the media maker, so ticking this box will allow them to post in every channel.

  • on the Push tab, enable auto push notifications, meaning for every new post a push notification will get sent to users who have not disabled them.

    • Enter a Title prefix, which will be added as a prefix before each push notification. For now we have agreed on the following structure:
      "Neu von {publication_title}"

This push notification will not get translated to other languages, so please write it it in the language that is most common among the users.

The push will then look like this, showing the prefix and then the title of the post (card) in bold and then the teaser text below.

    • Enter a Title and a Message: This will be shown in case there is no title or message available on the card for whatever reason and is a mandatory field when you enable auto-push.

Add content to the app

Manually

As an editor or admin, you can add content from any page within the native apps as well as from the web app.

Anywhere you see the (+) sign in the bottom right corner of the app, you can add new content.

You can then select which topic this content should appear in, write your post and even add any supported media such as videos, images, PDFs or links.

You can also schedule content to appear in the app.

via Steady RSS

If you would like all of your Steady posts to be included in the app, please reach out to us and we will integrate your Steady RSS feed (last 500 posts) in the app and they will be automatically assigned to the right topic within the app too.

via external RSS

If you would like to integrate an external RSS feed, e.g. from your website, into the Steady app, please reach out to us and we will set it up for you.

via podcast RSS feed

If you would like to integrate a podcast RSS feed in the app, please reach out to us and we will set it up for you.

Please be aware that a podcast feed included in the app will be accessible by all paying members in the app (it is not possible to differentiate by plan).

via Instagram or other social media feed

If you would like to integrate your Instagram feed in the app, please reach out to us and we will set it up for you.

Create a group chat

To create a group chat, navigate to the webapp of the app via https://{subdomain}-steady.tchop.io.

Then navigate to the Chat page via the left-hand navigation.

Then click on the plus in the top right corner.

Select Group chat and customize your group by adding a picture, defining a name and a short description that users will see prior to joining the group chat.

The chat level should be channel.

The access type should be public.

Once the group chat is created, you should also see it in the native apps. If you are not yet a member of the group chat, you will also see a prompt to join the group chat pinned on the top of the posts page of the app. It is currently not possible to disable the group chat to appear there.

As an editor or admin you can:

  • update chat info,

  • add or remove users from chat,

  • make other user chat admin

  • delete messages from any user (please note, there is a bug on iOS which prevents admins from being able to delete messages, this will get fixed)

Make other users a chat admin:

  1. Click on the info icon on the chat group

  2. Click on add member

  3. After you've added the member you want to add, click on Participants right next to the add members text

  4. Navigate to the name you want to make an admin and click on the three-dot-falafel menu next to the name

  5. Make them an admin.

This is also the place where you can ban members or revoke their rights to post messages in the group, i.e. giving them reader-only access.

Assign a post (card) to a different topic

To move a card from one topic to another, follow these steps from the webapp (not possible from the native apps):

  • Click on the falafel menu on the card that you want to move

  • Choose "Cut"

  • Navigate to the topic where you want the card to appear.

  • Click on the icon next to the button "Add content"

  • Paste the card

Get a deeplink to a post (to share in a Steady newsletter)

What is a deeplink? When a user clicks on a deeplink from wherever the user clicks on that link, they are redirected to the app (and to that particular post) if they have the app installed or to the app store if they do not have it installed. In other words, this link takes you deep into the app.

It's a good idea to incorporate deeplinks into Steady newsletters that you send to members to drive engagement within the app.

How do you find the deeplink?

  • navigate to the card or topic that you would like to direct your users to

  • click on the three-dot-menu (see screenshot)

  • click on deeplink

  • the link is now copied and you can insert it where needed

How can I pin content to the posts or topic feed?

In order to pin a post or card to the top of a page within the app, follow these steps:

  • navigate to the card or post that you would like to pin

  • click on the three-dot-menu (see screenshot)

  • choose one of the following options (or both)

    • pin in news feed --> the news feed is what we call Posts in the Steady app, it's the first page (all the way on the left in the bottom navigation)

    • pin to mix --> a mix is what we call a topic in the Steady app, when you select this, the post will be pinned in the topic that it was published in
