Using the Steady Community App as a Media Maker

Everything you need to know about the Steady Communtiy App

What is the Steady Community App?

The Steady Community App is a mobile app that lets you bring your paying members together in one space to connect, chat, comment, and engage more deeply with your work. It’s designed to make community a core value of your membership program and to make it easy for you to interact with your members.

In the app members can:

  • Read posts and listen to podcasts

  • Join chats and discussions

  • Send DMs to the creator and other members

  • Discover content recommended by real people, not algorithms

  • Keep up with everything you support, all in one place

🔓 Only members with a paid subscription to one of the publications participating can access that project in the app. Users who do not have an active paid subscription, will see the Steady Discover channel which shows curated content from Steady on different topics.

How can my publication be part of the app?

If you have an active project on Steady and want to be part of the app, please contact us. You can do that by using the Onboarding form or by reaching out to us directly. Until early 2026 we are in a soft launch of the app, where only a limited number of projects will be part of the app. We are planning a broader rollout in 2026.

Once your project is included in the app, as a media maker, you will have special rights within your publication on the app. For example, you will be able to post content on all tabs within the app for your publication. Further admin rights are currently in the process of being defined and we are always happy for input on what you expect to be able to do.

✅ What you can customize in the app

  • Bottom navigation: You can optionally add the following items to the bottom navigation (and obviously also the corresponding content to show on that screen):

    • Podcasts: requires at least one podcast RSS feed to show on that page

    • Social feed: requires a social media feed, e.g. Instagram. We can rename this item in the bottom navigation to a name of your choice (< 12 characters)

    • Community forum: requires one topic in which you allow members to post content. You can choose the name for this item (< 12 characters). You can also choose whether you want the content of the community forum to appear in your Posts feed.

    The bottom navigation

This is what the bottom navigation looks like. The items in the purple box are optional, and if used the name of the community and social screens can be customized.

  • Topics: In addition to adding the topics you use on Steady, we can add more topics in the app. You can also decide the order in which the topics should appear on the topics screen.

  • Group chats:

    • decide if you want to create group chats

    • if you do, you can define name, description and image of the group chats

  • Content to be automatically included in the app, see details here

❌ What you cannot customize in the app

  • Removing the following bottom navigation items

    • Posts

    • Topics

    • Chat

  • Customizing icons for the bottom navigation

  • Customizing fonts or any other UI you see in the app (We're always open to hearing your feedback, but any adjustments will be global adjustments)

How can members access your community in the app?

  1. Download the Steady app

  2. Log in with their Steady email (and enter verification code)

  3. Start reading and engaging in your community

Members with multiple subscriptions will see all their channels in the left-hand side menu.

We will provide a template post for you to send out to your members to invite them to the Steady app.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I download the app?

You can download it on Android and iOS.

Is there also a web version of the app?

Yes, there is! This might make it easier for you as a media maker to create content and/or respond to comments and messages from users.

The web version of the app is available under the following URL:
https://{subdomain}.steady.community

This will be available once your publication is set up and live in the app.

Who can access the app?

Only members with a paid subscription to your publication will be able to access your project in the app. Users without an active membership to a project that is part of the app will be part of the Steady Discover channel, which shows curated content from various Steady projects.

All written content in the app, e.g. a Steady post, will open in an in-app web browser. Within this browser, users will still see a paywall if the post is restricted to higher-priced plans.

Can I control which content appears in the app?

Yes, you can choose which content to integrate into the app automatically.

  • Steady posts via RSS feed: We can add your Steady RSS feed to the app, meaning all posts that you publish on Steady will appear in the app. If you use Topics on Steady, your posts will also be categorized within these topics.

  • Other written articles via RSS feed: You can add other content via RSS feed to the app. You can define under which topic or category the articles from this feed should appear. The app will not be able to categorize your feed into different topics.

  • Podcast via RSS feed: We can add one or multiple podcasts to your channel in the app.
❗️ Any podcast that you add to the app will be accessible to all members within the app; you cannot differentiate access by plan.

  • Instagram or other social media feed: We can add your instagram feed to the app .

Additionally to adding content from external sources to the app, you can also create content from within the native (or web) app.

How can I post content in the app?

Anywhere you see the (+) sign in the bottom right corner of the app, you can add new content.

You can then select which topic this content should appear in, write your post and even add any supported media such as videos, images, PDFs or links.

You can also schedule content to appear in the app.

How can I delete content in the app?

Any user can delete content that they created in the app.

As an admin user, you can also delete content created by other users.

Does the podcast player work in the background?

Yes. When users listen to a podcast within the app, they can continue browsing and engaging, or even minimizing the app.

Can features or access differ by membership tier?

Not quite. All features in the app are available to all paying members. When a member clicks on a post from within the app, an in-app browser opens with the post content. If the member does not have the entitlement to view that content, they will see a paywall.

All podcast episodes will be available to all paying members within the app, so it might not make sense to add a premium podcast feed that is only accessible to higher-priced membership plans.

Can members start their own group chats?

No. You as a media maker can define the group chats that you want and any member can join it.

All members can write direct messages to any other member who has downloaded and logged into the app.

Can I disable comments or DMs on Steady if I switch to the app?

Not at the moment. When we roll out the app more broadly, we will eventually make this possible.

What's the idea behind the community forum?

The forum gives you a place where members can post content, including videos, images, links, PDFs or just share their thoughts.

Here you can see the main difference of what's possible in a community forum vs. in group chats.

Community Forum

Group chats

Members can create posts

Members can create comments

All users can reply

All users can reply

Users can create threads, creating a more nuanced, orderly discussion

Users can add tags to their posts

Users can upload different media, incl. images, videos, PDFs or links

Content in the community forum is searchable

What can you decide?

  • do you want to create a community forum, i.e. a page/topic where members can post? (if yes, this will be pinned in the bottom navigation)

  • what should this community forum be called (< 12 characters)?

  • do you want content created in the forum to be shown in the Posts feed as well?

What happens when a user reports content in the app?

We receive an email about content that gets reported and will remove this content if it violates Steady's Guidelines.
