Newsletter Layer

How to choose the right display format for your Newsletter layer, and why it's worth using.

Why use the Newsletter layer?

Growing a newsletter list is one of the most reliable ways to build a direct relationship with your audience and eventually convert more of them into paying members.

The newsletter layer shows a subscribe prompt to visitors on your Steady page and your website. With Smart Layers, it appears automatically to the right visitors at the right time, based on their behaviour. Once someone subscribes, you can nurture that relationship and invite them to become a paying member when the time is right.

Even if you're not writing a newsletter yet, it's worth turning it on. Seeing subscriber growth is a great motivation to start — and gives you a head start when you do.

The Newsletter layer is enabled by default on your Steady pages. If you'd prefer not to show it, you can turn it off in your Layers settings.

Choosing a display format

There are three options:

Fullscreen overlay (recommended) — covers the full screen with the signup prompt. It's harder to ignore, which is why it converts best. There is still an option to close the prompt or choose "Maybe later".

Halfscreen overlay — appears on the bottom half of the screen. Less interruptive than fullscreen, but still prominent.

Sticky footer bar — a slim bar that stays fixed at the bottom of the page. The least interruptive option.

When a user dismisses the overlay without subscribing, we collapse the prompt to the bottom of the page.

Copy tips

Keep your headline short and direct — you have 30 characters. That's intentionally tight: short headlines convert better on mobile and give visitors less to read before deciding. Your button text supports up to 24 characters.
