I cancelled my membership – why am I still being charged?

The four most common reasons for charges after a cancellation – and how to check each one yourself in two minutes.

This article is for members. If money is still being charged after you cancelled, there is almost always one of four reasons. Here is how to find out which one applies – in just a few minutes.

1. Your cancellation was not completed

After every successful cancellation, Steady shows you a confirmation page and also sends you a confirmation email. If you did not receive a confirmation email, the cancellation was probably not completed.

How to check: Log in to Steady and open My memberships. A cancelled membership shows its end date in the “Cancellation effective” field. If there is no end date, the membership is still active – cancel it again: How do I cancel a membership on Steady?

2. The charge belongs to a different membership or account

Many members support several publications – or have Steady accounts under different email addresses. Your cancellation only ends that one membership in that one account.

How to check: Search your inbox (including spam) for “Steady” or “steadyhq.com” – we confirm every payment by email. This shows you which publication and which email address the charge belongs to. Then log in with exactly that address.

3. The charge happened before your cancellation

A regular cancellation takes effect at the end of the paid billing period. Example: You joined on the 15th of a month and cancelled on the 20th – your membership then runs until the 14th of the following month. The charge for the current period is not refunded, but you keep access until the end of the period. After that, no further charges follow.

4. The membership was reactivated

A cancelled membership can be reactivated until the end of its term with one click on “Reactivate” – it then renews automatically again and your payment method is charged again. Check under My memberships whether the membership shows as active again.

None of this applies?

Write to us at support@steadyhq.com with the date and amount of the charge (and the transaction code from your bank or PayPal statement, if available). We will look up the payment and resolve the case with you.
