If your site runs on WordPress, you can use the Steady WordPress plugin to integrate Steady on your website — including the Steady Paywall, the Checkout, and Layers. This article shows you how to install the plugin, connect it to your Steady page, and add a paywall.
Install and connect the plugin
In your WordPress backend:
Go to Plugins > Add New, search for Steady for WordPress, and click Install Now. You can also download it from the WordPress plugin directory.
Click Activate.
Open the plugin’s settings page and connect WordPress to Steady. You’ll find your WordPress key in your Steady backend under Layers > Website Setup: in the “How to integrate” section, select WordPress and copy the key.
The Steady button now appears in your WordPress editor. Use it to insert a paywall into a post.
Add a paywall to a post
A paywall hides part of a post until the reader becomes a member. It’s triggered when they scroll to the spot where you placed it, and shows a message inviting them to join and keep reading. Members never see it — they just read on.
To add one, open the post in your WordPress editor, place your cursor where the paywall should start, and click the Steady button to insert it there.
The paywall works in posts only, not on WordPress pages.
Steady then blurs everything after that point and shows the message you set in your Paywall settings. From there, readers go to your Steady page or the Checkout (if enabled), where they can buy one of your membership plans and unlock the rest.
Troubleshooting
If the paywall doesn’t appear as expected:
Make sure you’re using the latest version of the plugin.
The plugin doesn’t work with the Cachify cache plugin, on Accelerated Mobile Pages, or in combination with Infinite Scrolling. See the compatibility of Steady integrations for details.
If you re-edit an older post that already had a paywall in the Gutenberg block editor, the paywall can disappear. Just insert it again.
Plugin or JavaScript: which should you use?
You can install the Steady Paywall in two ways: with the WordPress plugin, or by adding Steady’s JavaScript code to your site manually. Each has its upsides — decide which option makes more sense for you.
Use one method only. Running the plugin and the JavaScript paywall at the same time will cause errors.
