How can I claim my gift membership? FAQ for gift recipients

All you need to know about your gift membership.

Lucky you! Someone has sent you a gift membership (or, in other words, a subscription) to a publication or content creator.

We are Steady — we manage the payments and membership programme for the creator or publication you’ve been gifted.

Your membership includes:

  • Financial support of the publication or creator, so they can keep doing what they do. You’re supporting independent media, and you should feel good about that!

  • Either 1 month or 1 year of membership, depending on what your gifter chooses.

Your membership may also include:

  • Access to paywalled or exclusive content just for members

  • Other benefits specific to your membership plan

Now you might be wondering how to start enjoying your membership.

Let’s get you set up.

Step 1. Look for a welcome email in your inbox

When the giver purchases your gift, they will provide your email address. Then we immediately send you an email to let you know about your gift and how to access it.

This email should say “[The name of the giver] has gifted you a membership 🎁”.

Step 2. Create a Steady account

You can access your membership only with a Steady account.

If you don’t have a Steady account yet, use the link in that email to set a password and accept our terms and conditions.

If you already have a Steady account, the email will prompt you to log in to Steady so you can access your gift right away.

Step 3. Enjoy your new membership!

Here are some answers to other questions you may have about your gift.

When does my membership start and end?

Your gift membership starts immediately, the day that your gifter purchases it.

Your membership is either for one month or one year.

The end date for your membership is in your welcome email and in your Steady account.

Will my membership auto-renew?

No. Gift members are one-time purchases only. So if you’re enjoying your gift membership, make sure you put it on your wishlist again next year—or simply join the creator’s membership programme yourself.
